Lope Juban is the man behind the movie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-ast-global-color-8-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-18699ac5f2f49bd78976ab82b481b677 wp-block-paragraph\">MANILA, Philippines \u2013 During his days at De La Salle University, Lope \u2018Jun\u2019 Juban was voted \u2018Most Unlikely to Succeed.\u2019 Years later, Juban is one of the most successful producers in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-ast-global-color-8-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-5198839ffeab23272901e01de2048c7b wp-block-paragraph\">Philippine Film Studios, his production house, has worked on a string of international titles, including: \u201cAn Officer and a Gentleman,\u201d \u201cPlatoon,\u201d \u201cBorn on the 4th of July,\u201d and the \u201cSurvivor\u201d series for Israel, Sweden and France.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-ast-global-color-8-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-a938c7d1da8242f938e9d30fcf70b72c wp-block-paragraph\">Juban, who has helped keep international film focus on the Philippines, is now the local producer for \u201cBourne Legacy.\u201d The spy drama is the first Hollywood film of its magnitude to be shot here and feature Manila as itself, instead of as a double for another Southeast Asian locale. From securing locations, negotiating fees and assembling crew, tremendous responsibility sits on Juban\u2019s shoulders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe width=\"100%\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/EDK32IpbMtM?si=X59TQv9J-0nv4767\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-ast-global-color-8-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-267f4d699b508c7661d117ba3b468d03 wp-block-paragraph\">An unlikely candidate<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-ast-global-color-8-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-5f4e98612c02da10ee54c16b9a5fe354 wp-block-paragraph\">Juban grew up in the shadow of his elder brother Dennis, who headed the family production house after their father passed away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-ast-global-color-8-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-b98334de3eb9e12b450348aa6b0bf0bb wp-block-paragraph\">Juban struggled with his college entrance exams while his brother graduated high school valedictorian and went on to become a chemical engineer. But when his beloved brother died in a horrific helicopter crash in 1978, Juban decided to take over the reins of the family business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-ast-global-color-8-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-67df609c47713caf74874220edb009f0 wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI decided to go into filmmaking mainly because of the people who were relying on us, on filmmaking, our crew, our production assistants, our production managers. Because everybody was displaced,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-ast-global-color-8-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-e237796c6a08e2fbb04a6eca46a045fd wp-block-paragraph\">When he was only 18 years old, Juban asked his mother for five years to steer the business to success. He never looked back. \u201cOnce the bug bites you that\u2019s it,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-ast-global-color-8-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-cccaefee2f3f1ecdd39c2e2ff92173bc wp-block-paragraph\">Since then Juban has established a successful background in production. He once helped light up America\u2019s presidential plane, Air Force One, for an overnight stay at Ninoy Aquino International Airport. He created a brochure to show for it with the slogan, \u201cwe don\u2019t just light sets, we light airplanes too.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-ast-global-color-8-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-cfdf7dbe8920c3cf2cf64c3233eba69f wp-block-paragraph\">In 1986, at the height of the People Power revolution, Juban kept the shooting of \u201cPlatoon\u201d on schedule. He recalls sitting with American director Oliver Stone in what was then the Manila Garden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-ast-global-color-8-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-2d46c8c4f2aca91e06d610c4da1829f0 wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn front of us there was a long line of tanks going into (Camp) Crame to quell the revolution. So I was telling Oliver Stone, \u2018See, it\u2019s a show of force. Don\u2019t worry about it.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-ast-global-color-8-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-eab4b095c39e9ba81005dabf82a98202 wp-block-paragraph\">A few days later, the country\u2019s dictator fled. Juban had good reason to worry since he had secured approval for the war film from Marcos\u2019s Department of National Defense. But he immediately began coordinating with the new government and a week later, filming resumed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-ast-global-color-8-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-330b08ea9a01b351f4b9865d4b23dd6b wp-block-paragraph\">Helping the Philippines<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-ast-global-color-8-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-2ca7b224de911a94313a923a6fb8eaa4 wp-block-paragraph\">In the course of his work, Juban has seen his film productions spark local economies. In the span of his four years helping produce the \u201cSurvivor\u201d series for France, Israel, India and Sweden, he has seen their set, Caramoan, transform from a 4th class to a 2nd class municipality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-ast-global-color-8-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-bee51014e4e7c230c97f2aceb23b99cc wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen we went there 4 years ago there was nothing there,\u201d says Juban. The crew had to carry in the gas for their speedboats by the gallon and sometimes even resort to toting Coke bottles as containers. \u201cNow there are two gasoline stations. Tourism is thriving,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-ast-global-color-8-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-063da59dc726bdeca0ef2228da57305a wp-block-paragraph\">Each \u201cSurvivor\u201d series usually brings in at least 100 foreign staff and crew. Juban explains that their mere presence boosts tourism since the Philippines has been slapped with travel advisories in the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-ast-global-color-8-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-105280e06880186dd364434505bee7b1 wp-block-paragraph\">He says, \u201cIt (filming in Caramoan) has helped the local economy tremendously [but] the more important thing is the image that it has projected.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-ast-global-color-8-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-018724e3b408a46459508f9a1ac6de66 wp-block-paragraph\">Juban explains that he doesn\u2019t try to impress foreigners with the size of his office. He focuses on what he can deliver. \u201cOur name is Philippine Film Studios. A foreign guy once asked what we have in our studios. I said hot air.
